Lana Del Rey will soon release Born To Die: The Paradise Edition – an expanded edition of her 2012 breakthrough album. The reissued Born To Die album will feature eight brand-new songs, including “Ride”, a track produced by Rick Rubin. While there are some of us out there who think Born To Die was a hot mess, “Ride” might be one of the few salvageable tracks in there. The string-heavy and piano-driven ballad is very pretty. Indie rock outfit, Guards, is gearing up for the release of their aptly titled debut LP, In Guards We Trust, due out on February 5th.“Silver Lining” is their first single: an upbeat little number that will remind you just how good these guys are. Lana Del Rey did a David Lynch-inspired commercial for fashion retailer H&M, where she covered “Blue Velvet.” In the two-minute clip, she makes use of her lower register, as she languidly sings in front of a creepy audience. And now, she has released a video with the full cover. The opening strings instantly call to mind “Born To Die”; the faraway drums and use of echoes reinforce the song’s sense of nostalgia. Natasha Khan, otherwise known as Bat For Lashes, has unveiled another single from her upcoming album, The Haunted Man, due out October 23rd via Parlophone. “All Your Gold” blends well together electronic beats, synth and guitar, while Khan sings about wanting to leave her man. The whole thing is great, until you realize that the song bears a striking ressemblance to Gotye’s summer hit “Someboday That I Used To Know”, and by then, that’s all you can think about, really. Mumford & Sons have unveiled the video for “I Will Wait”, the first single from their much anticipated upcoming album, Babel, due out September 25. The clip uses footage from their recent stop at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. Of course, the band, performing in front of a packed crowd, put on the kind of show we’ve come to expect of them – as epic and invigorating as ever. Watch below.
Death Cab For Cutie frontman, Ben Gibbard, has released “Teardrop Windows” – the lead single from his forthcoming solo debut, Former Lives, due out on October 16. The track has a feel-good, folksy kind of vibe – a welcome relief from the sometimes morose DCFC catalogue. Gibbard plays hommage to Seattle’s Smith Tower: the oldest and tallest building in the city, until the arrival of the Space Needle. Here’s some of the lyrics: “Ivory white but feeling kinda blue / Because there’s no one there to see the view [...] In 1962, the Needle made it’s big debut / And everybody forgot what it outgrew.” Listen below.
David Byrne, the former Talking Heads frontman, and St. Vincent, singer-songwriter otherwise known as Annie Clark, have teamed up to create their collaborative album, Love This Giant, which will drop on September 11 (you can stream the full album on NPR). “Who” is their first official single, and they’ve released a video to go with it. In the black-and-white clip, Byrne finds Clark laying still in the middle of the road; he picks her up and teaches her how to dance. Awkward all around. Watch below.
Former Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ guitarist, John Frusciante, is back with his upcoming album, PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone, set for a September 25th release. You can get a taste of the new LP with “Walls and Doors”: Frusciante has crafted an inventive, erratic and ever-changing medley of melodies – it’s a real trip.The songwriter released a statement about the track:
“This song, recorded in September 2010, marks the point at which I began combining 60s and early 70s production styles with modern electronic production styles. This song was also the first time I successfully balanced pop music with abstract forms of music. This song showed me that the pop parts of myself and the more adventurous parts of myself could blend without one compromising the scope of the other.”
Here is Muse‘s controversial and highly anticipated (and/or dreaded) dubstep song, “Unsustainable.” The track, like the video, is theatrical and apocalyptic: as society breaks down and everything gets screwed up, Matt Bellamy’s vocals kick in, taking the song to its climax. Passion Pit‘s former keyboardist, Ayad Al Adhamy, is leading a new band called Team Spirit, and they are gearing up for a fall release of their self-titled debut EP. Their first single, “Phenomenon” sounds nothing whatsoever like Passion Pit, but don’t let this disuade you. The guitar-driven, power-pop track is energetic and instantly catchy. Check it out below.
