The seven-piece band AgesAndAges hails from Portland, Oregon. They released their first album, Alright You Restless, in February and, although I’m a bit bummed that I arrived so late to the party, I’m also kind of glad that I’m discovering them in the summer. These songs need to be played outdoors.
The song “So so freely” is choral pop at its best, and in my opinion, the album’s standout track. The melodies are absolutely infectious, and before the song is over, I assure you, you will be fighting the need to dance, or at the very least tapping your feet to the rhythm – if not, you’re dead inside. The layered vocals and relentless drums are just fantastic. It’s just such a happy song, from start to finish.
This is an energetic and exciting debut album. The joyfulness that exudes from these tracks is pretty hard to resist. Although the arrangements and instrumentation may be minimalist and uncomplicated (and not terribly original), it is undeniable that these songs are very well crafted. Ultimately, it is the soaring vocal harmonies that make this album so special. I love the campfire pop quality about them; it is fun, honest and accessible. If you like Akron/Family or the Polyphonic Spree, this is the band for you. Check them out.
